KPMG Nigeria has appointed a former Nigerian Statistician-General, Dr Oyeyemi Kale, as its chief economist.

IKPMG Nigeria disclosed the appointment in a statement, stating that the partners and staff of the firm were pleased to welcome Kale, the former statistician-general of the federation between 2011 to 2021.

According to the statement, the new chief economist would lead the firm’s view on macroeconomics and enhance the breadth of its solutions involving economic modelling and macroeconomic analysis in private and public sector clients.

It added that Kale holds a B.Sc. Honours degree in Economics (first class), Addis Ababa University and an M.Sc. (distinction) and PhD in Economics from The London School of Economics and Political Science.

As the statistician-general of the federation and chief executive officer of the National Bureau of Statistics, he transformed the operations of the agency, making data a key component of economic policy and planning in Nigeria, the firm said.

According to KPMG Nigeria, under Kale’s watch, the NBS leveraged infographics to simplify the way economic data is communicated, which connected with professionals and the public.

Mr Kale was first appointed in August 2011 as the statistician-general of the federation and chief executive officer of the National Bureau of Statistics, for an initial five-year term.

Before assuming office, he was the special adviser to the then Minister of National Planning.

In October 2016, he was reappointed for a second term of five years by President Muhammadu Buhari, which he completed in 2021.

“He also ensured that the statistics office adopted global best practices to ensure the integrity of data, run economic surveys and collaborations with key government parastatals, agencies, and the private sector.  His dedication, handiwork, resilience, integrity and drive for innovation earned him respect across the nation and in the international community,” the statement claimed.
