Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been knocked out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to England.
The Super Falcons put up a gallant fight dominating play for most part of the game. Ashleigh Plumptre hit the cross bar early on.
England struggled to create any clear-cut chance with their best player Lauren James finding it difficult to get on the ball.
James was sent off late in the second half after stamping on Michelle Alozie.
The game went into extra-time after both teams failed to hit target after 90 minutes of thrilling action.
The European champions were pinned back in the extra time.
Alozie and Asisat Oshoala both came close to breaking the deadlock for Nigeria.
It was England that won the tie 4-2 in the penalty.
Substitute Desire Oparanozie and Alozie missed from the spot for Nigeria.
