Meet US-based Temi Adeniyan, a Fast-Rising Nigerian Woman in Tech

Young Nigerians have continued to set records as they make impact in various disciplines across the world. What is more fascinating about this is how they the rise to become major drivers of great initiatives in far-away countries where they exhibit resilience and industry to fit into the new society.

While this may aptly describe Temi Adeniyan, a US-based Nigerian tech enthusiast and rising talent in the information security and IT auditing space, her determination to excel in tech has earned her special accolades to fit in the small room of women in tech.

While women make up 47% of all employed adults in the US, latest data shows that they hold only 28% of computing and mathematical roles, with women identifying as Asian or Pacific Islander making up just 7% of the IT workforce and Black and Hispanic women accounting for 3% and 2%, respectively. Temi is just among the very few tenacious ones.

Education

With a solid educational foundation, extensive practical experience, and a deep passion for cybersecurity, Temi Adeniyan is making waves in the IT industry as a meticulous and ethical professional. Her journey across different countries and industries underscores her dedication and expertise in safeguarding information systems.

Temi’s academic journey began in Nigeria, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Literary Studies from Adekunle Ajasin University. Her growing interest in cybersecurity led her to the United States, where she is currently pursuing a Master’s in Cybersecurity and Networks at the University of New Haven, with an expected graduation date of December 2024.

Career Trajectory

Her professional career took off at Venture Garden Group in Lagos, Nigeria, where she quickly distinguished herself as an IT Operations Officer by solving complex IT problems and optimizing local company networks. Her innovative solutions and leadership qualities earned her a promotion to Information Systems Auditor, where she performed security audits and ensured compliance with regulations.

In 2022, Temi joined First Bank Nigeria LTD as an IT Auditor. She led major ISO and PCI DSS audit projects, assessed IT governance, and provided in-depth security control reviews. Her work was instrumental in guiding the bank toward stronger security protocols.

In 2023, Temi in the United States worked as an Information Technology Risk Analyst at Avant LLC in Chicago. Although her tenure there was brief, her contributions were pivotal in shaping a new model for technology risk management.

Currently, Temi is making a significant impact as an Information Technology Auditor at Shure Incorporated in Niles, Illinois. Since May 2024, she has led IT audit projects, identified critical IT risks, and implemented agile testing procedures, ensuring the security of the company’s information systems.

Beyond Professional Career

Beyond her professional achievements, Temi is a passionate leader and mentor. She has been instrumental in raising awareness for sustainable development goals and organizing key conferences. Her commitment to mentoring is evident in her roles with several prestigious programs:

CyberSafe Foundation’s CyberGirls Fellowship: For the past three years, Temi has been a mentor in the CyberGirls program, which provides a one-year intensive fellowship designed to equip young women aged 15-21 across Africa with critical cybersecurity skills. This initiative addresses the significant gender gap in cybersecurity by offering hands-on training, certifications, and paid internships, empowering these women to secure employment in a traditionally male-dominated field.​

Silicon Slopes Women Leadership: This initiative is part of a broader effort to foster diversity and inclusion within Utah’s tech community, aiming to attract and retain more women in technology. Through mentorship, Temi contributes to building an industry model that leverages diversity to strengthen organizational culture and leadership.

Cyversity: As a mentor with Cyversity, Temi supports the program’s mission to diversify the cybersecurity workforce by providing guidance and support to underrepresented groups. Her role in Cyversity helps bridge the gap for many aspiring cybersecurity professionals, ensuring they have the resources and mentorship needed to succeed in the industry.

Temi’s dedication to continuous learning is reflected in her numerous certifications, including Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity, PECB Certified ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor, and Agile Product Management. Her technical skills span a wide array of tools and platforms, making her a formidable presence in the IT industry.
