Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World

Atlanta has held the world’s number one spot for years, but this month’s rankings show real movement beneath it, with one Chinese hub leaping six places in a single year and Dubai clawing its way back into the top 10 despite a steep capacity drop tied to regional conflict.

Here is how the world’s 10 busiest airports stack up on total scheduled seats for July 2026, according to OAG.

  1. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL) — 5.58 million seats, −2% YoY

Atlanta keeps its long-held crown as the world’s busiest airport, even as capacity slipped slightly against last July. It remains comfortably ahead of the field, more than half a million seats clear of second place.

  1. Chicago O’Hare International (ORD) — 5.05 million seats, +6% YoY

O’Hare holds second position and is growing faster than the airport ahead of it, one of the stronger performances among the world’s largest hubs this month.

  1. Shanghai Pudong International (PVG) — 4.84 million seats, +7% YoY

The biggest mover in the entire top 10. Pudong leapt from ninth to third in a single year, the fastest growth rate on the list, and a clear signal of how quickly China’s aviation market is expanding.

  1. Tokyo Haneda (HND) — 4.71 million seats, flat YoY

Haneda holds steady in fourth, capacity essentially unchanged from July last year.

  1. Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) — 4.71 million seats, flat YoY

Practically tied with Haneda on seat numbers, Dallas/Fort Worth also shows no meaningful year-on-year movement, rounding out a stable top five.

  1. Istanbul Airport (IST) — 4.69 million seats, −1% YoY

Istanbul slips two places from fourth a year ago, though the dip is marginal. It remains Europe’s busiest airport by a wide margin.

  1. Denver International (DEN) — 4.64 million seats, flat YoY

Denver holds its position from last year, unmoved in the rankings and in capacity terms alike.

  1. Guangzhou Baiyun International (CAN) — 4.59 million seats, +5% YoY

China’s second entry in the global top 10, Guangzhou climbed from tenth to eighth on solid 5 percent growth.

  1. London Heathrow (LHR) — 4.49 million seats, −1% YoY

Heathrow drops one place from eighth, a slight decline that nonetheless keeps it inside the world’s elite tier.

  1. Dubai International (DXB) — 4.35 million seats, −18% YoY

The most dramatic entry on the list. Dubai returns to the global top 10 after slipping out, yet its capacity remains 18 percent below where it stood a year ago, a decline OAG links to ongoing disruption from conflict in the Middle East. It is a reminder that a top 10 ranking does not always mean a market is thriving.

Further down the rankings, the story shifts. Dubai reclaims the title of world’s busiest international airport despite that same 18 percent fall, ahead of Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol. In Europe, Istanbul Airport reclaims the continent’s top spot from Heathrow, while Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen posts the fastest growth of any European airport in the top 10, up 9 percent to 2.82 million seats. Madrid also stands out, growing 8 percent domestically and 7 percent internationally, the strongest rate among the world’s leading international hubs.
