US Embassy Issues Fresh Visa Warning to Nigerians Over Fake Documents

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned visa applicants against submitting fraudulent documents or providing information that could raise security concerns, noting that such cases could lead to immediate action by relevant US government agencies.

The US Mission in Nigeria issued the warning on Monday, August 24, 2026, through its official X account.

The embassy said consular officers will alert appropriate US government agencies whenever they detect fraudulent documents during the visa application process or uncover information suggesting that an applicant may pose a potential security threat.

“Fake documents can get you banned,” the US Mission said.

It added that the coordination is aimed at protecting US national security and keeping criminals and other “bad actors” out of the country.

The US Mission said visa applicants should understand that the submission of fraudulent documents can have consequences beyond the immediate visa application.

According to the embassy, consular officers work with other US government agencies when they identify suspicious documentation or information during the screening process.

“When consular officers detect fraudulent documents in a visa application or uncover information suggesting an individual may be a potential threat, we immediately alert all appropriate U.S. government agencies.”

It added that the agencies are coordinating “to protect national security and keep criminals and bad actors out.”

The embassy did not disclose the number of Nigerian applicants currently being investigated or specify the types of fraudulent documents involved.

The warning comes at a time of increased attention around US visa and immigration policies affecting Nigerians.

Nigeria was among 75 countries that recently received relief after a US federal judge struck down a policy introduced under President Donald Trump that had suspended immigrant visa processing for nationals of the affected countries.
