ALTON Warns of SIM Services Disruption as Telcos Migrate to New ID System

Millions of telecom subscribers in Nigeria are facing temporary disruptions to SIM-related services following a nationwide migration to a new identity verification platform mandated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) on Tuesday alerted the public to the development, stating that the transition has introduced unforeseen technical difficulties that are affecting services across all mobile networks in the country.

According to ALTON, the disruption affects critical functions such as SIM registration, SIM swaps and replacements, and Mobile Number Portability (MNP), all of which depend on real-time identity verification.

“The migration process has introduced unforeseen technical challenges that are currently affecting service availability nationwide,” the association said in a statement signed by ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Barr. Damian Udeh.

While the move to a new system is aimed at improving the integrity and efficiency of national identity management, the changeover has made it temporarily impossible for mobile network operators (MNOs) to activate new lines or support existing subscribers requiring SIM-related interventions.

As a result, ALTON has urged subscribers to delay visits to telecom service centres for SIM services until further notice.

The association also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured customers that operators are working closely with NIMC, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and other relevant authorities to restore services as quickly as possible.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause to millions of subscribers who depend on these services for communication, business, and daily activities,” ALTON said. “We sincerely apologise and remain committed to ensuring the delivery of secure, reliable, and high-quality telecommunications services.”

The association pledged to provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
