Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced a significant hydrocarbon discovery at the JK-004 exploration well in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, marking its first major exploration success since completing the acquisition of Shell’s onshore assets.
The announcement was made during the 25th Nigeria Oil & Gas (NOG) Energy Week in Abuja.

Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance, Tony Attah, said preliminary evaluation indicated that the exploration well encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs across seven productive zones.
According to him, initial logging and fluid analysis confirmed high-quality reservoirs containing light crude oil, raising expectations for additional reserves growth.
Attah described the discovery as a major milestone for the company and evidence that Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act is already stimulating fresh investment and exploration activities.
He specifically credited the “Drill or Drop” provision of the law for encouraging operators to actively develop licensed assets rather than hold them indefinitely.
The discovery comes less than one year after Renaissance completed the acquisition of Shell Petroleum Development Company’s onshore assets, reinforcing optimism about the future of indigenous operators in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry.
Industry stakeholders at the conference described the find as another positive signal that ongoing reforms are beginning to unlock new exploration opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term oil production outlook.
