Tinubu Reconstitutes NERC Board, Appoints Oseni as Chairman, Ali as Vice Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees on December 16, 2025.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the shake-up cements new leadership roles and renews terms for several commissioners as the administration intensifies reforms in the power sector.

Under the new board structure, Dr. Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni has been appointed Chairman of the Commission. Oseni, who joined NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later became Vice Chairman, assumed his new role on December 1, 2025. His tenure will run until he completes the statutory 10-year term provided under the Electricity Act, 2023.

Dr. Yusuf Ali, who first joined the Commission in February 2022, has been named Vice Chairman. His designation also took effect on December 1, 2025, and will remain valid through the end of his first term.

Other members of the reconstituted Board include:

  • Nathan Rogers Shatti, Commissioner, now serving a second term after his initial appointment in January 2017.
  • Dafe Akpeneye, Commissioner, also reappointed for a second term, having joined the Commission in January 2017.
  • Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, Commissioner, serving her second term since her first appointment in December 2020.
  • Chidi Ike, Commissioner, appointed in February 2022 and currently in his first term.
  • Fouad Animashaun, Commissioner, beginning his first term effective December 2025. He is an energy economist with broad experience in the Nigerian power sector and previously served as Executive Commissioner and CEO of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu charged the newly constituted board to deepen and consolidate ongoing reforms across the electricity value chain, emphasizing strict adherence to the provisions and reform intentions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

With the renewed leadership, the administration expects the Commission to accelerate progress toward a more efficient, reliable, and investment-friendly electricity market in Nigeria.
