The Federal Government on Thursday said it would announce the date for the reopening of Nigeria’s airspace for commercial flight resumption and operations next week.
It stated that the airports remained shut as some gaps in the aviation restart process had not been closed.
Musa Nuhu, the Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), disclosed this during Thursday’s briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja.
He, however, made no mention about the submission of the restart plan for the aviation sector.
As the sector warms up to reactivate business from COVID-19 lockdown, local airlines had urged the federal government and the PTF to reopen the airspace for airlines and airports that have satisfied safety protocol to begin operations.
The carriers, under the aegis of Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), said more days were bound to be wasted and revenues lost should the system wait for every stakeholder to be ready.
The appeal was made on the heels of the NCAA’s submission of its findings and recommendations to PTF on Thursday.
Flight resumption has been a matter of utmost interest to the operators, their workers and the public who depend on the means of transportation to reach their destinations for personal and business purposes.
