Who Is Emmanuel Nnorom, the Banker Succeeding Tony Elumelu as UBA Chairman?

When United Bank for Africa (UBA) announced that Emmanuel Nnorom would succeed Tony Elumelu as Group Chairman from August 21, 2026, the decision marked more than a routine board transition. It signalled the elevation of one of the bank’s longest-serving executives and one of Nigeria’s most experienced corporate leaders.

Nnorom’s appointment follows Elumelu’s retirement after completing the 12-year tenure limit for non-executive directors prescribed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Although he joined UBA’s Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024, his relationship with the bank stretches back decades.

Before returning to the Board, Nnorom spent more than eight years in executive management at UBA, holding some of the institution’s most strategic positions. He served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director responsible for Finance and Risk, Executive Director in the Group Executive Office, and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, where he supervised the bank’s operations across several African markets during a critical phase of its continental expansion.

His appointment comes with more than 40 years of experience spanning banking, finance, auditing, operations and corporate governance.

Outside UBA, Nnorom has occupied leadership positions in some of Nigeria’s most prominent companies. Since June 2017, he has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, overseeing investments across financial services, power, healthcare, hospitality, real estate, technology and energy.

Before that, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp), where he led one of Nigeria’s largest conglomerates with interests in power generation, hospitality, agriculture and energy. He also briefly served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Heirs Holdings during the group’s formative years.

His banking career extends beyond UBA. He previously held senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank, with responsibilities covering finance, strategic planning, operations, information technology, risk management, human resources and regulatory affairs.

Professionally, Nnorom is both a chartered accountant and a banker. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). He also attended Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.

Born on April 7, 1958, Emmanuel Nwabuikwu Nnorom has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished corporate executives, combining experience across banking, investment management and board governance.

When he assumes office as UBA’s Group Chairman on August 21, Nnorom will inherit one of Africa’s largest banking groups, with operations in 20 African countries and four international financial centres. His immediate task will be to provide strategic oversight for the institution while sustaining the pan-African growth strategy that has defined UBA over the past decade.

For investors and industry observers, the transition also represents continuity. Rather than bringing in an outsider, UBA has chosen a chairman who understands the bank’s history, has helped shape its African expansion, and has spent much of his professional career within the institution whose board he is now set to lead.
