NSIA, Africa50 Launch $300m Fund to Expand Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Access

Nigeria has launched a $300 million fund to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy solutions in underserved communities, as the country seeks to close electricity access gaps and improve power supply for businesses and households.

The Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund was launched by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Africa50 and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), with a focus on mobilising capital for mini-grids and standalone solar systems in areas without reliable electricity.

The initiative was unveiled as a key outcome of the inaugural ASIS Global Action Forum in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Co-managed by NSIA and Africa50, with SEforALL providing energy-access leadership, the fund is designed to channel investment into distributed renewable energy projects that can extend electricity access beyond the reach of conventional power infrastructure.

By targeting underserved communities and businesses, the initiative aims to address energy poverty while creating conditions for greater economic activity and improved livelihoods.

Yusuf Umar, managing director and chief executive officer of the Renewables Investment Platform for Limitless Energy (RIPLE), an initiative launched by NSIA, said financing structures capable of directing capital towards viable energy solutions would be critical to narrowing Nigeria’s electricity access gap.

“Closing Nigeria’s energy access gap requires more than recognising the scale of the challenge; it requires financing structures that can bring viable solutions to the communities and businesses that need them most,” Umar said.

He described the $300 million fund as an important step towards mobilising capital for distributed energy solutions at scale.

“Through collaboration, disciplined investment and effective implementation, we can help expand electricity access, support businesses and create opportunities for more Nigerians to participate in economic growth,” he added.

The fund’s launch formed part of the outcomes of the ASIS Global Action Forum, convened by Sterling One Foundation in partnership with NSIA, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), RALLY and other partners.

The forum built on discussions and commitments from the fifth Africa Social Impact Summit, held in Lagos in July, with a focus on translating development priorities into practical initiatives.

Olapeju Ibekwe, chief executive officer of Sterling One Foundation, said the renewable energy fund reflected the need to turn development discussions into interventions capable of delivering measurable benefits.

“At the Africa Social Impact Summit, we believe that the true value of development conversations lies in what they make possible beyond the room. Reliable energy can unlock opportunities for businesses, improve essential services and strengthen livelihoods,” Ibekwe said.

Implementation will determine impact

The fund’s significance will ultimately depend on how effectively it translates investment into new electricity connections, more reliable power for businesses and improved access for communities that remain underserved.

Distributed renewable energy solutions, including mini-grids and standalone solar systems, can provide alternatives for locations where conventional electricity supply remains unreliable or inaccessible.

For Nigerian businesses, improved electricity access can support more consistent operations, while households and essential services stand to benefit from more dependable power.

However, the scale of the fund’s eventual impact will depend on project deployment, effective investment and sustained cooperation among public institutions, investors, development organisations and private-sector partners.

As Nigeria continues to confront its electricity access challenges, the $300 million initiative represents a major financing commitment towards expanding distributed renewable energy. Its ultimate test will be how much reliable electricity it delivers to the people and businesses it is designed to serve.
