Olamide Idowu, the brain behind Nigerian rising fashion brand, TJO Fashion

As Nigeria gradually emerges from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses are finding their feet again. The past two years have tested entrepreneurs in ways few could have imagined, forcing them to rethink their businesses, adapt to changing customer needs and find new ways to survive. The fashion industry has been no exception.

For many people, fashion is once again becoming part of everyday life as offices reopen, weddings return to full scale and social events pick up. But clients are also making more deliberate choices, looking for quality, value and clothing that lasts.

It is within this changing landscape that Olamide Idowu is quietly building TJO Fashion, a young fashion brand driven by quality craftsmanship, personalised service and the belief that everyone deserves to look their best.

Formally registered in 2020, TJO Fashion was established during one of the most difficult periods for businesses. While the timing came with obvious challenges, it also reinforced the values on which the brand was founded: resilience, creativity and a commitment to putting clients first.

Looking back, Olamide remembers just how difficult those early days were.

“Everything became more expensive almost overnight. Fabrics were unstable in the market, transportation costs kept increasing because we had to visit the market several times a week, and the cost of petrol meant we also spent more just to keep the business running. Even shipping orders outside Nigeria became much more expensive.”

Those rising costs inevitably affected customers.

“Many of our clients simply couldn’t afford what they used to. We saw orders reduce, and that was one of the toughest periods for the brand.”

Yet giving up was never an option.

“I’ve always believed in pushing through difficult times. Instead of giving up, I looked for ways to balance things and keep the business running.”

Building a Brand with Purpose

Olamide’s journey into fashion began with professional training, where she developed the practical skills and discipline required for bespoke tailoring. But beyond learning the craft, she developed a deeper appreciation for what fashion means to people.

“I realised that clothing is more than what we wear. When people feel good about how they look, it gives them confidence.”

That belief became the foundation of TJO Fashion.

Rather than creating a fashion brand focused only on trends, Olamide wanted to offer something more personal. She built her business around the idea that quality tailoring should not be reserved for people with large budgets. Every client deserves the opportunity to wear clothing that fits well, reflects their personality and makes them feel confident.

“One thing we’ve always tried to do is see things from the client’s perspective. We work with their budget and still try to bring their vision to life. At the end of the day, it’s about helping people become exactly who they imagine themselves to be.”

This philosophy influences everything from consultations to pricing, making flexibility and empathy central to the business.

Blending African Identity with Contemporary Design

One of the defining features of TJO Fashion is its ability to combine traditional African influences with modern fashion.

From weddings and birthdays to corporate wear and special occasions, each outfit is designed to reflect the personality of the client while maintaining clean finishing and quality craftsmanship.

For Olamide, fashion should be timeless rather than seasonal.

She hopes that, with time, TJO Fashion will grow into a respected Nigerian fashion brand known for creating elegant pieces inspired by African culture while appealing to contemporary tastes.

A Business Built on Relationships

Like many small businesses, TJO Fashion has grown largely through referrals and repeat customers.

Olamide believes that listening is one of the most important parts of her work. Before any fabric is cut, she takes time to understand the client’s expectations, the purpose of the outfit and the budget available.

That personal approach has helped the business build trust with its growing clientele.

She says the greatest reward has been the confidence clients place in her work.

“Many of my clients keep coming back because they trust me. One thing I hear often is, ‘You’re one of the few people who never disappoint and always deliver.’ For me, that’s worth more than anything else.”

Rather than seeing each order as a transaction, she sees it as an opportunity to build lasting relationships—something she believes is essential for any young business hoping to succeed.

Growing One Stitch at a Time

Although still in its early stages, TJO Fashion continues to make steady progress.

The business has delivered bespoke outfits for weddings, celebrations, corporate engagements and individual clients, gradually building a loyal customer base through quality work and word-of-mouth recommendations.

As production increases, the business also supports local fabric suppliers and collaborates with skilled artisans whenever required. Wherever possible, garments are produced on a made-to-measure basis, helping to reduce unnecessary waste while ensuring every piece is created specifically for the person who will wear it.

For Olamide, success is not measured only by the number of outfits produced.

“Success, to me, is when a client looks in the mirror and feels confident. That’s what keeps me going.”

Like many entrepreneurs starting out, Olamide knows that building a successful fashion brand is a gradual process.

TJO Fashion is still laying its foundation, but her ambition is clear. She hopes to continue improving her craft, strengthen the business and build a brand that will be recognised for quality, integrity and excellent customer service.

For her, every completed outfit represents more than another job. It is another step towards a dream that began with a passion for fashion and a desire to make quality tailoring accessible to more people.

“The challenges made us stronger. They taught us to be resilient, to put our customers first and to never stop improving. That’s the mindset that still drives TJO Fashion today.”

As the fashion industry finds its rhythm again in a post-pandemic world, TJO Fashion is positioning itself as one of the many young Nigerian brands proving that resilience, creativity and genuine customer care remain the strongest ingredients for sustainable growth.
